He will contest for the fourth time for the party from the Fifth District seat of the state of Minnesota. He won the party's nomination for the seat, defeating former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels.
Despite trailing in the primaries, Ilhan Omar's ability to raise large amounts of funds for the election is believed to have played a key role in securing his party's nomination.
After 2022, Ilhan has collected around 6.8 million USD. Members of the US Congress can typically raise half that amount in re-election campaigns. Samuels managed to raise only $1.4 million.
Ryan Dawkins, a professor of political science at a college in Minnesota, said, 'Since he had to be in a very difficult situation during the last (2022) election, this time he went down a dead end. Especially on the ground fighting and his great fundraising numbers put Samuels far behind.'
It is expected that Ilhan will easily win the election on November 5.
Ilhan is the first Somali-American lawmaker in the US Congress. At the same time, a former African refugee became the first member of Congress. He came to the United States nearly two and a half decades ago as a refugee from Somalia. In 2018, he was elected as the first Congress member.
