Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has submitted nomination papers to compete for the post of Chancellor of Oxford University in the UK. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) made the announcement on Sunday. Imran Khan is lodged in a jail in Rawalpindi. A representative submitted the nomination paper on his behalf. Recently, 80-year-old Chris Patten, the former chairman of Britain's opposition Conservative Party and Tory Party and the former governor of Hong Kong, left the position of Chancellor of Oxford University. Chris Patten served as Chancellor of the University for nearly 21 years.
According to tradition, graduates of this institution are physically present during the election of the Chancellor of the University of Oxford. However, this time, voting will be done online.

Pakistan's World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan served as Chancellor of Bradford University from 2005 to 2014. He is an alumnus of Oxford University. He graduated from Oxford in 1975 with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics.

Syed Zulfi Bukhari spoke about the issue while talking to the British newspaper The Telegraph last July. He said, people (many related to chancellor election) are interested in Imran Khan. So he will fight for the post of chancellor of Oxford University.
Imran Khan is currently in jail in the northeastern garrison town of Rawalpindi. He is seeking bail in multiple cases, including charges of corruption and incitement to violence. However, Imran Khan denied these allegations. Apart from this, two of Imran Khan's sentences were quashed and a third suspended by the court.
72-year-old Imran Khan became the Prime Minister of Pakistan after winning the 2018 elections. He was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, more than a year before the end of his five-year term.
According to the Guardian, the Convocation of Oxford University is responsible for electing the Chancellor. Anyone wishing to contest for the post of Chancellor must be nominated by at least two members of the Convocation to be considered eligible. Convocation will be asked to elect a new chancellor through an online ballot in the third week of the autumn term on 28 October, according to the University of Oxford's website. The new Chancellor will hold the post for 10 years. Traditionally the post of Chancellor is reserved for university graduates. Politicians often stand in this position.
